Abstract

Database encryption is essential for protecting sensitive information, maintaining data confidentiality, and
meeting regulatory requirements in modern data-driven applications. However, encryption can introduce
computational overhead that affects query performance, resource consumption, and system scalability. Common
approaches, including Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), column-level encryption, and client-side encryption,
provide different levels of protection and performance trade-offs. Despite their widespread use, limited empirical
evidence exists on how these techniques perform under comparable transactional and analytical workloads. This
study presents a comparative evaluation of major database encryption strategies based on key performance
indicators, including query latency, throughput, CPU and memory utilization, storage overhead, and index
efficiency. A reproducible experimental framework is used to assess the performance implications of each
encryption approach under controlled workloads. The study examines how encryption-related processing
overhead influences database responsiveness and resource utilization while considering the security benefits
provided by each technique. The findings are expected to provide practical evidence of the performance-security
trade-offs associated with database encryption and support informed decisions by database administrators,
developers, and system designers. The study contributes to the development of database security strategies that
achieve an appropriate balance between strong data protection, query performance, and operational efficiency.
