Abstract

Slice generation is a critical preprocessing step in Additive Manufacturing (AM) that transforms a three-dimensional CAD model into a sequence of two-dimensional cross-sections for layer-wise fabrication. For homogeneous objects manufactured from a single material, the slicing strategy governs the trade-off between geometric accuracy, surface quality, build time, and material consumption. This paper provides a detailed review of slice generation techniques relevant to rapid manufacturing. The paper discusses the overall AM process chain, data preparation, part orientation, and different slicing methodologies including uniform slicing, adaptive slicing, and direct slicing. The influence of process parameters such as layer thickness, build orientation, and toolpath strategy is examined. Key challenges such as stair-stepping error, computational complexity, support structure generation, and data format limitations are analyzed. The review concludes that advancements in slicing algorithms and software integration are essential for improving the efficiency and part quality in rapid manufacturing of homogeneous components.
