Abstract

This project develops an automated Visual Inspection System (VIS) for railway crack detection using a high-speed
digital scan line camera and advanced image processing techniques. The system continuously monitors railway
tracks in real time to detect cracks and structural faults, helping prevent derailments and accidents. Captured
images are processed using track extraction algorithms and Otsu’s thresholding method to enhance crack
detection accuracy. When defects are identified, the system instantly sends remote alerts to nearby stations,
reducing dependence on manual inspections and improving railway safety, maintenance efficiency, and public
transportation reliability.
